The Empress of all the Russias was not amused. Even the antics of her favourite cabinet
ministers failed to lift her spirits.
The unmitigated gall of those people! A Congress of the Great Powers is called, and she does not even receive notification, never mind an actual invitation!
Reminded further of the source of her pique, she hurls a goblet at a portrait of Fredrick, King of Prussia, hanging on the wall.
She misses, of course, but does succeed in shattering a number of egg like objects sitting on the sideboard underneath.
This worsens her temper. Those of her retainers permitted to move find a discreet corner to hide in, or in the case of some of those with better reactions and more svelte figures, a sturdy sideboard or cabinet to hide behind.
Excluded from the Congress! She would show them all.
She tapped her chief minion with her scepter and asked that Prince Akraxin be summoned to attend her at his earliest convenience. She then had to ask the underminion to convey the the message, as the chief minion appeared to have been completely incapacitated by her “light tap” and would not be in a condition to stand, never mind go and fetch someone, for some considerable time. Foui. Minions have no stamina these days.
Prince Philip Philipovich Akraxin entered the room in very short order, but with a caution born of experience.
After the ritual greetings and abasement were complete, he enquired how he could serve her imperial highness.
“Gather an army for a campaign in Europe. You will command it.” intoned the empress.
With the smoothness of a true courtier, Akraxin thanked her imperial highness for the signal honor, promised to uphold both her reputation and that of Holy Mother Russia on the field of Mars, and pledged to leave that day, no that very hour, on her mission.
He had just one minor question first. Her imperial highness would excuse him, he begged, he had been unwell, and therefore out of the flow of news (this was a complete untruth; Akraxin was so plugged in to the court gossip mill that it was claimed he knew the latest rumor before it had begun). However, he was unaware that the country was currently at war with anyone….
“It will be” answered her imperial highness “by the time you have the army assembled”.
